Called to Continue Christ’s Mission

Jesus travelled from city to city healing the sick and proclaiming God’s kingdom. But even the Son of God had limits. Moved by deep compassion, he saw the crowds as “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” So he turned to those who had been watching and learning from him. He transformed his disciples — students — into apostles — people sent out with his authority to heal and to bring God’s kingdom to the world.

Jesus gave his church three foundational commands. Go and do these things in my name. Baptise all nations. Break bread in remembrance of me. These were practical, outward actions — not suggestions. The first apostles carried them out immediately. The church has faithfully continued them ever since. Every baptism, every Eucharist, and every act of peacemaking is the church fulfilling those same commands today.

You and I are the living result of the apostles’ faithfulness — and we are called to continue it. Every Christian is both disciple and apostle. We learn from Jesus, then go out to do his work. Each Sunday, the Mass ends with the words “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” That is our sending. Baptised, fed, and equipped — we are called to bring Christ’s compassion to the world around us.
